What Is Prayer?

Praying is about having a desire to connect and grow and deepen our relationship with God

Simply put, Prayer is communicating with God

Communication is extremely important in every relationship. Think about your friendships, if we don't keep in contact with our friends we loose that closeness with them.
Sure, things might seem the same when you get together as they often are with close friends, but you lose that deep relationship because you no longer know everything about them.
The same is true with our prayer life.
Since God is not physically here with us our only connection to communicate with him is prayer.

Prayer should not feel like an obligation (something you feel forced to do) it should come from the desire to be closer to God

After all, who talks to people they don't care at all to get to know
We also shouldn't only pray when we need something from God. He is our father, but he is not only there to provide for us, he wants to truly know us and our hearts.
He also wants us to know him and our hearts.
It is only through communicating with him that we can really know him. This makes the difference between believing in him and having a personal relationship with him.

There are several different types of prayer:
  • intercession (praying for others)
  • petition (asking God for something)
  • thanksgiving (giving thanks to God)
  • penitential (confession) prayer (expressing sorrow for your sins)
  • meditation (simply "listening to God”)
  • liturgical prayer (Lords prayer) (written prayers)
Wee need to be praying about everything, just as we would tell our closest friends everything, we should be telling God everything.
