Where is Jesus?: looking and hoping for the Messianic kingom
Present Application: that Messianic kingdom is already here, and because of it we no longer have that barrier. We can have a personal relationship with him
- Last week Pastor Josh talked about the book of Psalms, which is out of order in the Bible, but it helps us see who David is better
- So this week, we will be talking about Psalms
- There are 150 Psalms, most of them were written by David (73)
- many of them were musical
- we see a lot of them in our present day worship
- Psalms is commonly broken up into five books
- Book 1 (3-41)
- Book 2 (42-72)
- Book 3 (73-89)
- Book 4 (90-106)
- Book 5 (107-145)
- --
- Book 1-3 are mostly Laments
- Book 4-5 are more praising and have a message of hope
- Psalms is a book of poetry
- made up of Lament and Praise
- Laments
- prayers of pain, confusion, and anger
- asks God to do something
- it’s okay to have pain and to be sad
- Psalm 69
- Praise
- draw attention to the good
- thank God
- praise him
- Psalm 100
Messiah predicted in Psalms
- Throughout the Old Testament the Messianic Kingdom is predicted
- this is the time where the Messiah, or Jesus, will come
- Psalms is full of predictions of the Messiah
- remember that Jesus is from the line of David, who happens to be the author of 73 Psalms
-
- The book of Psalms is a series of lament and praise poems with this message of the messianic king weaved throughout it
- it sends us a message of hope
- not to ignore pain, but to look ahead through the pain
- think about the situations David was going through when he wrote some of these Psalms
- hiding from Saul
- Hiding from Absolom
- these are some difficult situations, but he held onto God’s promise in 2 Samuel 7 (promise of Messianic king to David)
- he knew that those situations were not the end and he was able to praise God through it
- even in many of the laments there are praises
- we need to learn how to do this in our own lives
- We all are going through some dark things
- depression, break ups, divorces, loneliness, not feeling good enough
- whatever it is, it’s okay to lament
- the key is not to leave God out of it
- he wants to hear you!
- So where is Jesus?
- he is the message of hope in our lives just like he was for those who read through the Psalms with the hope for the Messianic king
- The book of Psalms is a series of lament and praise poems with this message of the messianic king weaved throughout it
